Taste of Home: Busy Family Cookbook: 370 Recipes for Weeknight Dinners

I purchased this cookbook a month ago and have tried several different recipes. So far my family has loved every single one of them, and there are a lot more that I can’t wait to try. This cookbook is designed for busy families (in case the title didn’t tip you off); if you have the time, energy, and desire to cook exotic and extravagant meals, this is not the cookbook for you. But if you’re like most families I know, and so busy that you have the pizza place’s number memorized, then you should definitely give this book a chance. Regarding an earlier review, I agree that this is a good cookbook for a new cook, but I would also recommend it to any busy family, even if the cook has some experience. It’s easy to get stuck in a “dinner rut” when you’re constantly needing fast & easy meals; this cookbook is the cure. I’d also recommend it for families with picky eaters, as the recipes can satisfy the adults’ desire for something different without being so exotic that the kids won’t eat it. I’ve looked at other cookbooks and haven’t found any that had such a large number of recipes that I wanted to try. The recipes are all quick and easy, and they don’t require obscure ingredients. I love that most of the recipes include a photograph and a brief comment. I used to agonize over what I’d fix for dinner on weeknights; now I’m excited, thinking “which recipe should I try next?” This cookbook is well worth the money–5 stars.
I am married and have three children, ages 11,10, and 7. By the time we get home and get dinner started its 6 p.m. This cookbook has been a Godsend.
I cooked the herb pork medallions and my eldest, who only prefers meat in the hotdog form, said “That’s the best dinner I ever had”. She’s asked for it a couple times since. Its a great cookbook for those busy mothers or fathers trying to cook something “out of the box” in a short time.
Pros: Recipes are divided by how many minutes it takes to prepare the item.
Cons: Some of the recipes are for just “everyday” kinds of food that I really don’t need a recipe book to know how to make (e.g., some of the different sandwiches or chicken recipes).
I am by no means a “gourmet” chef, but I found that some of these recipes were too simple and not really that extraordinary. I have much better recipe books from Taste of Home. This would probably be a great starter recipe book for a young person who is just beginning to cook and needs ideas, in my opinion.
I *LOVE* this cookbook. Like the reviewer before me pointed out, some families can find themselves stuck in a dinner rut. That’s exactly what happened to me. I have been cooking for years and years, and (not being arrogant but) I think I am a really great and creative cook. Lately, it’s just been tough to keep up with everything. This book makes it so much easier. I love the book because it excites me. I can prepare gourmet tasting meals in minutes, and even some of the simpler recipes that the reviewer before mentioned (like sandwiches) are really good. My son loves making the colorful chicken croissants because they are fun and tasty but chalk full of veggies and fruits (smart way to get a kid to eat well!) Also, each recipe has a time in the corner (10, 20, 30, 30+) to let you know how long it is going to take to make. I love it because on not so good nights, we go with 10 minutes recipes. On better nights, when I really feel like cooking, we go with the 30 or 30+ recipes. They have all been wonderful–and the desserts are so simple it’s laughable, but they’re relatively healthy and really really yummy!! I’m buying more Taste of Home books, no doubt in my mind!
I bought this ‘Busy Family Cookbook’ recently
and believe me,my wife just is so eager to try
all the recipes. What she likes about the book
is that it utilizes fairly basic ingredients. We do
not live close to a very large supermarket,so this
is important to us.
What is also nice about this cookbook is that it
has the approximate time given that it will take
to do each entry. This is a great help for a busy
Mom.
I highly recommend this cookbook!
